Scope and Content

The series contains materials generated by William S. Banowsky during and related to his time at Pepperdine University, with items dating between 1958 and 2006. Sub-series 1.2: Pepperdine Correspondence 1958-2012

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains materials relating to Pepperdine University, including materials created during William S. Banowsky's career and presidency, as well as items related to his continued relationship with Pepperdine after his departure in 1978. Included are correspondence, articles, minutes, memorandums, reports, informational brochures and materials, programs, invitations, membership information, remarks, and notes.
Also included are a few files containing materials created around the time Banowsky was a minister at the Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock, Texas, just prior to his move back to Pepperdine University. Materials include general correspondence; correspondence with the Biblical Research Press regarding publications; inquiries about post-graduate study opportunities; correspondence, notes and photos on the 1967 Playboy debate; notes and correspondence about returning to Pepperdine University; correspondence, agreements and invoices from Revell publishing house regarding the book It's a Playboy World; and correspondence and informational materials concerning Litton Industries.

Scope and Content

The sub-series has files on various subjects and people that contain primarily correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, notes, and other paper materials collected in the office of William S. Banowsky during his time at Pepperdine University in the capacity of Executive Vice President, Chancellor, and President. The files contain documentation of university policies and procedures, material generated from administrative work and activities at Pepperdine, and information related to interests that would improve the Pepperdine community, including the process of moving the campus from Los Angeles to Malibu.

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains materials from the Pepperdine Board of Trustees and Board of Regents, including meeting minutes, memorandums, amendments to the bylaws and articles of incorporation. Between 1975 and 1976, the governing board was expanded and the name was changed from the Board of Trustees to the Board of Regents, while the members of the former Board of Trustees became the Religious Standards Committee.

Banowsky's relationship with the Gaylord Broadcasting Company (later called Gaylord Entertainment Company, referred to here as "Gaylord"), first as a member of the Board of Directors and later as president of the company from 1985 to 1988. This includes correspondence, board meeting minutes, company accounts, articles, notes, speeches, reports, invitations, memorandums, programs, flight schedules, informational material, bills, press releases, and budgets.

A large number of saved items are from Banowsky's time at the University of Oklahoma, including programs from football games, Priority, and The Sooner Magazine. Other publications include various mainstream and Christian titles, such as Life, The Saturday Evening Post, the Lipscomb News, Los Angeles Times, Christian Chronicle, and others. Some publications are full issues of various titles, while other items are individual articles or poems. Many of the sermons saved were given by Batsell Barrett Baxter.

Scope and Content

The series contains primarily speeches, sermons and oral histories conducted and collected by William S. Banowsky. Most of the speeches and sermons were given by Banowsky. The materials are in multiple formats: DVD, CD, VHS, betamax, audio reel, and audiocassette tape. Most audio reels and audiocassette tapes have been digitized.
Speeches, sermons, and other recorded audio date between 1956 and 1994. Topics are primarily church sermons (some given in series), speeches to religious or business groups, and others. Highlights include the commencement of construction of Pepperdine in Malibu, Banowsky's wedding in 1956, and the Playboy debate.
Oral histories were conducted between 1964 and 1996, with or about the following individuals or topics: Helen Pepperdine; T.W. Phillips and Hugh Tiner; T.W.
