Scope and Content of Collection
The Peninsula Gay and Lesbian Youth Group records document some of the activities of this Palo Alto-centered support group,
from its formation in 1984 to 1988. The group offered discussion sessions, peer counseling, referrals to services, and information
about organizations, events and topics of interest to LGBT youth, such as AIDS risk reduction. The group later worked in coalition
with the LAMBDA Institute on San Francisco to start the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Awareness Program, a project of outreach
servicing local high schools. The collection contains Board materials, including meeting minutes; financial records; flyers;
mailings about the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Awareness Program, a project of outreach servicing local high schools; materials
about other LGBT youth groups and services; news clippings; and a small amount of correspondence. Of particular interest are
materials related to a legal dispute over an ad the group placed in The Campanile, the Palo Alto High School’s student-run
newspaper. These include the ad, agendas and minutes from Board of Education meetings, a written description and defense of
the group by its facilitator Rhio H. Whirter Hiersch, and the legal opinion of the law firm, Breon, Galgani, Godino, & O’Donnell.
The collection also contains materials from a later support and advocacy group for LGBTQQ teens on the Peninsula, Outlet,
which was founded in 1997. These include training and resource materials from the group’s mentorship program, a flyer and
a fundraising letter.
