Abstract: Mexican-American Baseball in Los Angeles: From the Barrios to the Big Leagues was a collaborative event developed by the Baseball
Reliquary, a Pasadena based nonprofit organization, and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library. The project focused on the historic
role that baseball played within the Mexican-American communities of Los Angeles County and the greater Los Angeles metropolitan
area. In addition to the exhibition (March 26-June9, 2006), the CSULA Univeristy Library hosted a reception on April 9, 2005.
The exhibition and the project moved to CSU, San Bernardino in 2008 and was renamed, The Latino Baseball History Project:
The Souterhn California Experience.

Biographical / Historical
Mexican-American Baseball in Los Angeles: From the Barrios to the Big Leagues was a collaborative event developed by the Baseball
Reliquary, a Pasadena based nonprofit organization, and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library. The project focused on the historic
role that baseball played within the Mexican American communities of Los Angeles County and the greater Los Angeles metropolitan
area. In addition to the exhbition (March 26-June 9, 2006), the CSULA University Library hosted a reception on April 9, 2005.
The exhibition and the project moved to CSU, San Bernardino in 2008 and was renamed, The Latino Baseball History Project:
The Southern California Experience.
Scope and Contents
The bulk of the collection contains materials concerning the planning of the exhibition and the reception that preceded the
opening. It also contains the course readings for the History 450 classes, oral histories, and memorabilia.
Series I: Planning Materials
All of the planning materials were organized inot two binders, one identified as volume 1 and the other as volume 2. The original
order of the Planning Binder(s) has been maintained. There is also a small amount of correspondence dated 2005-2006.
Series II: Postcards, Programs, and Articles.
Series III: Photographs, 2005
The photographs were taken during the reception held at the library on April 9, 2005. They are unidentified.
Series IV: Oral Histories, 2005 and 2007
As a part of the CSULA course History 450 (2005), students conducted oral histories with local Mexican-American to talk about
their experiences with baseball or softball. Material includes course readings and mini DV tapes.
History 450 was also offered in 2007. Students interviewed baseball scouts; there was also a baseball scouts panel discussion
(recorded). This material is available in the CD (4) format.
Series V: Memorabilia, undated
Items include a "Carmelita Chorizo" baseball cap and two signed baseballs.
