Mike Medavoy was born in 1941 in Shanghai, China. He studied at UCLA and graduated in 1963. After graduating, he began his
career in the Universal Studios mailroom, later working as a casting director and agent before eventually becoming a film
producer. In 1974, he became senior vice president of production for United Artists. In 1978, Medavoy became the co-founder
of Orion Pictures, which he headed for twelve years; in 1990 he was appointed chairman of TriStar Pictures, and eventually
he co-founded and was chairman of Phoenix Pictures. Medavoy has been involved in a number of philanthropic endeavors including
serving on the Board of Directors for the Museum of Science and Industry in Los Angeles and on the board of trustees for the
UCLA Foundation.
The collection consists of memoranda and correspondence related to the career of producer and executive Mike Medavoy. Included
are ten files of news digests memos and other memoranda from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) (1986); three
files of general memoranda and correspondence related to Orion Pictures (1984-1986); and three files representing philanthropic
endeavors from 1985-1986.
