Biography / Administrative History

Wes Hammond has been a professional free-lance photographer since 1948. A native Californian, born and raised in Los Angeles, he majored in fine arts and photography at San Jose State University. He careered on photo-journalism and sports photography in the Los Angeles area doing work on a freelance basis for such publications as the Los Angeles Times, Sports Illustrated and World Sports Magazine. In 1956 he returned to northern California to live in San Jose, and concentrated on industrial photography, working for FMC Corporation until retirement in 1985. After retirement he remained active, putting most of his work into fine art photography with occasional contract work in the industrial field. He has been exhibited nationally as well as published in many magazines and other publications. Pioneering in the use of the 35mm camera in black and white photography since 1948, he has since seen its wide acceptance as a professional and fine arts tool in photography.
