Tullis, Robert, A Family Outing to Jesusland 1991

Physical Description: 1 videotape(s) (u-matic)

Scope and Contents

a family's discussion of their interpersonal relationships in the setting of Idaho's diverse landscapes. After young Beulah's mother dies "in the line of housekeeping" (struck by lightning while gathering in the laundry), her father gets religion and takes the whole family - Beulah, Junior and Basque-speaking mother-in-law - on an Idaho vacation in search of Jesusland. Dad doesn't know where or even what Jesusland is, but that doesn't deter him. As for Beulah, she has her own way of getting the most out of her holiday. "There are over 570 separate species of animals in Idaho," she says, "many of which can be seen in various forms of decay along the 5,000 miles of Idaho highway. On road trips, I would play Dead Zoo. . . ." With a Native American trickster pursuing the family and the ghost of Ernest Hemingway making a guest appearance, "Family Outing to Jesusland" takes considerable risks. It also gets its portrait of a malfunctioning all-American family painfully right: Beulah longs to go fishing with Dad, who insists on taking along only Junior, who of course hates fishing. Some of the performances are stilted, but the two kids are fine and the film looks great. Tullis' Western skies rival those of Gus Van Sant, and his eye for Idaho's lava-bed country is equally sharp.

Bloom , Stacy, Atypical Love Story 2001

Physical Description: 1 videotape(s) (betacam-sp)

Scope and Contents

Atypical Love Story is an intimate portrait of a rather controversial and definitely complex relationship. Betsy met Fernando in 1991. She was then a 34 year-old divorcee struggling to raise two young children, maintain her small Florida farm, and still work as an elementary school teacher. At 16, Fernando was the eldest son of the Peruvian family that had moved in with Betsy to work in exchange for housing. As the months went by, Betsy and Fernando developed a deep friendship. When their closeness became apparent to the outside world (each of their immediate families, his high school, her work place), rumors regarding the exact nature of their relationship ran rampant. In 1993, their relationship did in fact evolve into romance. Despite the disapproval of society-at-large and not least of all, Betsy's daughter (just 6 years younger than Fernando), eight years later they remain a couple.

Inyang, Etang, Badass Supermama 1996

Physical Description: 1 videotape(s) (betacam-sp)

Scope and Contents

I've gotta crush on a woman named Foxy Brown." Badass Supermama is a playful, but questioning exploration of the videomaker's race, gender, and sexual identities, as well as, adolescent notions of beauty, body image, sexuality, and representation. These multi-layered, interconnected issues are examined through 1970's "blaxploitation" movie goddess Pam Grier and her karate kicking, tough-black-mama characters, particularly Foxy Brown. The videomaker tries on the powerful, badass supermama role of Foxy Brown, while exploring the space between body and image. The video is gently critical, playing with the idea of masquerade, as well as girlhood and adolescent fantasies of womanhood.
