    Scope and Content

The bulk of this collection consists of cassettes and reels of music and poetry commissioned for Philip Brookman’s documentary video production entitled Mi Otro Yo. The collection includes audio-cassettes for the seminal Califas: Chicano art and culture in California conference that took place in 1982 at UC Santa Cruz. An index to the Califas audiotape is included in this collection.
The audio recordings include interviews by Ed Carrillo and Cruz Zamarron in preparation for the Califas art exhibition. Other recordings include an artists’ panel discussion, audio recordings of interviews with artists that were transferred from videotapes to audio-cassettes. There are also audio recordings of poetry.
Box 1 contains personal papers, ephemera and photos of a Juan Muñoz Menchaca and his family and friends. It appears that Muñoz Menchaca is Mexican migrant from Tijuana whose discarded suitcase containing materials documenting his life was found by Philip Brookman at the railroad tracks in San Diego in 1986. Brookman used selected images from these documents and photos in his documentary film, Mi Otro Yo. Included in the box are a synopsis of Mi Otro Yo as well as a script and other production related files.
