Scope and Contents

Collection consists of original dark green cloth covers with blue endpapers. Hinges and joints of upper and lower covers split; spine is loose. Pages gilt-edged. "T.J. Flower, Druggist, Hartford, Conn." in faded black ink and pencil on front free endpaper. Script: written by multiple hands. Volume is paginated in black, printed Arabic numerals (1-268). Pages 1-96 contain a table of contents; a calendar for 1870; tables of the phases of the moon, the pulse, normal human weights and measurements, medical signs and abbreviations, incompatibles, medicinal weights and measures, and thermometry in diseases; Marshall Hall's ready method in asphyxia; poisons and their antidotes; and lists of medicines by Tilden and Co., with doses and formulae for reducing their fluid extracts to tinctures, syrups. Pages 97-235 consists of pre-lined, blank ledger paper with various pre-printed headings: "memoranda of medicines wanted, monthly visiting lists and records, obstetrics, memoranda, vaccination record, and record of deaths." These pages contain manuscript notes by the druggist, T.J. Flower, the owner of the book. Entries included recipes for compounding both narcotic and non-narcotic medications for a variety of illness and conditions including tape worm, obstetric pain, "Elixir of Paregoric for Asthmatic," "Powders for the Diarrhea of Infants," "Blue Mass," "Blue, Green, Yellow, Violet, and White Fire," Campbell's Injection for Gonorrhea," "For Handerchief," gout pills, "Root Beer," and "For a Prevention in Cohabitation" among others. In addition to numerous errors in pagination, many pages have been torn out by previous owners: pages 99-100, 105-106, 117-128, 235-238, 251-256, 259-260 are missing as well as an unknown number of pages at the end of book. Includes a recipe for "Filtering pulp" signed by "Geo.W. Higgins, 57 Oliver St., Boston, Mass."
