Collection consists of a leatherbound blank book inscribed and used by Thomas J. Turner, U.S. Navy, to list "directions from Med. Bureau", physical examinations, exclusions, or rejections of 19 candidates, and chemistry and materia medica questions those and other candidates were assigned to answer in an examination. The notebook begins with a list of four members, of the examining panel for the Naval Medical Bureau: Surgeon I.M. Foltz, President (Anat[omica]l Surgery, Obstetrics), Surgeon Jos. Wilson (Med. and Med. Jurisp[rudenc]e), Surgeon Wm. Lowber (Anatomy and Physiology, Mat. Med.), and Surgeon T.J. Turner, Recorder (Mat. Med. [crossed out] and Chemistry). The "Directions from Med. Bureau" are followed by a brief "Letter from Bureau", dated June 27, 1867, about information to collect and submit if an applicant is determined to be unfit to serve because of his health. A long gap with blank pages is followed by notes on the oral examinations of 16 candidates dated March through May, 1866. When the notebook is flipped over and read from the back, it contains a list titled "Question in Chemistry", with 8 numbered and 23 unnumbered brief examination questions. More than half of the handwritten, in ink, questions are marked with a pencilled "x" in the left margin. Only 26 pages are completed.
