Biography/Administrative History
Queer Son is a 1993 documentary by Vickie Seitchik, telling the story of families with queer sons and daughters. Seitchik,
who had previously made documentaries on modern dance, had joined PFLAG after her son, Mark Goldstein, came out in the 1980s.
A few years later, at the New York Pride Parade, Mark's biological and chosen family marched in t-shirts labeled MOM, STEPFATHER,
GRANDPOP, FRIEND, QUEER SON, and QUEER SON'S BOYFRIEND -- from this would eventually come the title of Seitchilk's film, which
drew on extensive interviews with other PFLAG families. Seitchik filmed the interviews with the aid of two of Mark's friends,
edited the film herself, and polished and finalized it in consultation with filmmaker Alan Berliner. After four years of work,
the completed film went on to be extensively shown at festivals and purchased by libraries. This collection tells the story
of queer families in the 1980s and early 1990s, as well as the story of a queer documentary's creation and the festival scene
into which it emerged.

The collection contains full transcripts of the interviews that went into the film, information on the film's distribution
and promotion, film festival programs and ephemera, sales documents, reviews and awards, and letters sent to Seitchik in response
to the film. It also contains copies of the film in multiple formats, as well as the original recordings of the interviews,
a PFLAG sash, and festival ephemera.
