Administrative / Biographical History
Elisha Merritt Whitten, M.D. was born 13 June 1834 in West Bath, Maine. He attended the Medical School of Maine at Bowdoin
College, receiving the M.D. degree in 1865 following a course of lectures at Harvard Medical School and two in Maine. Arriving
in 1867, he practised for 48 years in Nebraska City, Nebraska, serving twice as president of the Nebraska State Medical Association
(one term ended in 1879) and at one time as professor of gynecology at the University of Nebraska (1884-1887). His home, built
in 1874 and enlarged in 1902 and serving as both residence and office, is listed on by the National register of Historic Places
in the Southwest Nebraska City Historic District. Dr. Whitten died 4 September 1913 in Nebraska City.
