This collection contains letters written by Captain James Broderick Safford (1842-1930) to his father James M. Safford, during the American Civil War. This collection also contains letters written by James Broderick Safford's younger brother, George Safford (b. 1845) to their father, as well as to James B. Safford. Born in July 8, 1842 in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York, to Anna Broderick Safford and James Mayhew Safford, James B. Safford enlisted into the 54th Indiana Infantry regiment in 1862 and rose to the rank of Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant. After completing his first tour of duty, Safford re-enlisted in 1863 into the 10th Indiana Cavalry as a private.

Safford was promoted to Sergeant Major and after the battle of Nashville, became the Adjutant to the Regiment. He was mustered out of the service in August 1865, after being promoted to the rank of Captain. He was married in 1877 to his second wife Anna Craig Safford (1855-1933), with whom he had four children, two of which were Harry Robinson Safford (b.1875-?) and Anna Laura Safford (1879-1979). James B. Safford died of chronic interstitial cystitis at the age of 87, on January 15, 1930 in Crafton, Allegheny County, PA. He was buried on January 17, 1930 in Fairmount Cemetery, Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana.

George Safford was born in Ohio in approx. 1845, also to Anna Broderick Safford and James Mayhew Safford. He enlisted in Madison, Indiana on December 28, 1863 into the 10th Indiana Cavalry, Company H. He was discharged June 30, 1865 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Before entering the "Old Soldiers Home," in 1899, he worked as a train conductor and lived in with his wife, Elizabeth, nee Delaney in Elwood, Indiana. They were married May 23, 1897. He died June 29, 1902 in a Marion, Illinois hospital of "cerebral softening," and is buried at Marion National Cemetery.

This collection also contains newspaper articles, photographs, and ephemera relating to James B. Stafford's life and death.

Of particular interest are two tin-type, framed images of Safford's parents and a Masonic funeral program for James Broderick Safford.
