Roman "Ted" Edwards was born December 6, 1929 to a Russian mother and British father. His surname was originally Pisani. His family moved to England in May 1946 before immigrating to the United States in 1948.

The Roman Edwards Collection contains photographs, ephemera, and a manuscript documenting Edwards and his British and Russian parents' lives in Shanghai in the 1930s and 1940s. Russian ephemera and photographs document Edwards' connection to Russia through his mother's family. Business ephemera and photographs document aspects of daily life in Shanghai, including Edwards' education at Cathedral School. His collection of matchbook covers were manufactured in China, Japan, Norway, and the United States, and include Japanese propaganda distributed in Shanghai during World War II. Photographs from a later trip to revisit China record the locations of Yu Yuen Road and Eastern Civilian Assembly Center internment camps in 1987.
