Biographical Note
Jay Kay Klein (1931-2012) began reading Science Fiction at a young age and joined the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society
when we has 14. He was an avid photographer and, during his lifetime, amassed an extensive photograph collection of Science
Fiction & Fantasy conventions and events. His massive repository of photographs was an invaluable resource to the community
and was in constant demand by authors, publishers, and many publications within the field. He was a regular contributor to
fanzines and maintained a regular magazine column writing short biographies for
Analaog Science Fiction and Fact. Klein's other professional work included writing and editing in corporate settings such as General Electric and Carrier
International.
Jay Kay Klein was a life long participant in Science Fiction fandom and a mainstay at conventions for decades. He was a member
of First Fandom and the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA). Along with his friend Dave Kyle, Klein co-chaired
the unsuccessful bid to host the 1966 Worldcon in Syracuse, NY.
Klein was recognized for his contributions to the field with the Big Heart award, the First Fandom Hall of Fame award, and
a presidential award from SFWA. He lived most of his life in Syracuse, NY and passed away in May 2012 of cancer.
Collection Scope and Contents

Kleins photographic work, participation in fandom, writing and publishing, and some of his personal and professional interests.

fellow members of science fiction fandom. He was a regular conributor to both fanzines and science fiction magazines, and

Series 1. Correspondence
1953-2010, undated
Series Scope and Contents
Jay Kay Klein had extensive correspondence with authors, publishers, and science fiction fans. He also corresponded a fair
bit regarding photography and amateur radio. Topics covered in the correspondence include inquiries to use his photographs
and providing payment and credit lines for that use, issues regarding copyright and the use of his photographs without permission,
convention matters (invitations, attendance, planning, and general discussions of cons), fandom and fandom concerns, publishers
and publishing, photography, and amateur radio.
Unidentified correspondence has been sorted into two categories, TO and FROM Klein, and placed at the end of this series.
The correspondence in these folders is unable to be attributed to a specific correspondent, either missing a name entirely
or only including a common first name. There are also letter fragments.
Series Arrangement
The correspondence is generally arranged alphabetically by last name. For correspondence with individuals operating on behalf
of a corporate body, or other organization, the letters are filed under the name of that corporate body. As an example: one
can find correspondence with Ben Bova in the Analog and SFWA correspondence files. Correspondence pertaining to convention
programming is placed in the Convention Series with the appropriate convention, though there is plenty of discussion of conventions
within this Correspondence Series as well.
Related Materials
See the Conventions Series for correspondence about conventions, such as planning and invitations.

Series 8. Fanzines
1945-2004, undated
Series Scope and Contents
Fanzines were a primary mode of sharing information and creating the science fiction community in the 20th century. These
fanzines were collected by Klein and serve as one demonstration of his fandom and engagement with the community, he was also
a frequent contributor to fanzines. Notes have been added to each title to list which issues are present.
Series Arrangement
The fanzines are arranged alphabetically by title and each title is then sorted chronologically.
Fan Resources
Two extremely valuable community created resources for 20th century science fiction fandom are
Fancyclopedia 3 and
Fanac . Both of these have extensive information about science fiction fanzines (creators/editors, numbers of issues, title changes,
distribution dates, etc).
Other Fanzines
The Eaton Collection holds numerous fanzines. These are primarily in the Fanzine Collection (MS 342), the Terry Carr Collection
(MS 359), and a handful of specific titles have been fully cataloged. All of these can be found in the UCR library catalog.
There are also fanzines in the Poul and Karen Anderson papers (MS 040) and the Stu Shiffman papers (MS 404), which are noted
in their respective finding aids.

Viewing the digitized photographs is the primary and preferred point of access.
Digitization
In 2017, a project was done in collaboration with the California Digital Library in which a selection of 5,933 images from
the Jay Kay Klein photograph collection were digitized and made available on Calisphere. Feedback was solicited from the community
to assist in identifying the images. A second project took place in 2020-2021 to incorporate this community feedback, make

were published in September 2021.
