    Biographical / Historical

    Captain James B. Austin, American Expeditionary Forces (1915 - 10/10/1918) lived in Omaha, Nebraska and worked as a manager for the US Light and Heat Corporation's railway sales division when he entered the officer's training camp at Fort Sheridan, Illinois on August 27, 1917. He became a first lieutenant and was promoted to captain February 16, 1918 while oversees. He was deployed to France and served with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division. In October, he was leading a charge against German machine gun nests near Cierges, France and was wounded in the stomach. He died in the hospital on October 10, 1918 and an account of his time wounded is given in a letter from his nurse to his widow, E.C. Austin. For his bravery he was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

    Content Description

    This collection contains correspondence and papers pertaining to Capt. James B. Austin, AEF during the First World War. Capt. Austin was mortally wounded in France and later died at a mobile hospital. The correspondence is from a nurse, Rose Peabody, to his widow on October 11, 1918. Also included are three certificates of promotion, one military death certificate, one periodical with an obituary for Capt. Austin and a certificate transcription for the Distinguished Service Cross awarded to Capt. Austin posthumously that was printed from the internet.
