Biographical / Historical
Harold Bruce Forsythe was an African-American composer, author, and poet of the 1920s and
1930s. Born in 1908, he grew up in Los Angeles, attended Manual Arts High School, and later
studied classical piano and composition at Julliard Graduate School from 1927 to 1928. He
collaborated with composer William Grant Still in composing the operas "The Sorcerer" and
"Blue Steel." By 1940, Forsythe's advancing deafness ended his career as a musician and
composer. He died in 1976.

Still. Included in the manuscripts are several essays by Forsythe about William Grant Still
and about several of Still's works, particularly his ballet "Sahdji." There are also audio
cassette tape recordings of the Forsythe program at the Huntington Library, February
1997.
