Historical Background

Guard Clement Darrah (1895-1987) was born in Lodi, California. In 1914, he graduated from Stockton High School. During the First World War, he served in France with the American Expeditionary Force. Returning home, he entered Stanford University, which awarded him bachelors and law degrees in 1920 and 1922, respectively. For the next four years, Darrah practiced law in Stockton and in 1926 was elected district attorney of San Joaquin County. A Democrat, Darrah also held a post on the San Joaquin County Planning Commission and ran unsuccessful campaigns to become judge on the California Superior Court (1938) and to serve in the California State Assembly (1960). Darrah married Lois Bertha Stroup (1899-1991), another San Joaquin County native, in 1922.

Scope and Content

The Guard Clement Darrah Politics Collection includes a variety of books from Darrah's personal library that date from 1849 to 1976, as well as family documents and articles and papers related to San Joaquin County business and politics from 1889 to the 1930s.
