Processing History
Processed by Albert A. Lowe and Katharine Lawrie; Shaula M. Stephenson, 2011 Fall Quarter; 2012 April.
The administrative files from the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department were held in a storeroom on the third floor
the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The boxes were not placed in any particular order, but the files
within the boxes were organized by type and then often by date.
Processing of grant proposal files was performed by Albert A. Lowe and Katharine Lawrie in the 2011 Fall Quarter. Files were
maintained in original order and weeded to remove documents irrelevant to the University Archives.
Processing of the administrative papers of chair Vijay K. Dhir was performed by Shaula Stephenson in April 2012. Files were
maintained in original order and weeded to remove documents irrelevant to the University Archives.
Final editing and preparation was performed by Kelly Besser with assistance from Alyssa Goodstein, 2013.

Historical Note
The UCLA College of Engineering was established in 1943 when California Governor Earl Warren signed a bill to provide instruction
in engineering at the UCLA campus. It welcomed its first students in 1945 and was dedicated as the Henry Samueli School of
Engineering and Applied Science in 2000.
The Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering Department was founded in 1984. The name of the department changed to the
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department in 1996 after the dissolution of the major field of nuclear science and engineering.
This name change is first reflected in the 1997-1999 UCLA Course Catalog. In 2012, the department had a faculty of 31 full-time
professors, all of whom serve as advisors or instructors to our 580 undergraduate and 285 graduate students.
A list of chairs of the MANE/MAE Department follows:
David Okrent: 1983-1985
William Kastenberg: 1985-1987
Peretz Friedmann: 1988-1991
Jason Speyer: 1991-1994
Vijay Dhir: 1994-2000
Lewis Mingori: 2000-2002
Thomas Hahn: 2002-2006
Adrienne Lavine: 2006-2011
