Biography/Administrative History

The El Capitan was a side-wheel steam-powered passenger ferry operated on San Francisco Bay. The ferry was built for the Central Pacific Railroad in 1868 in anticipation of completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad. The ferry offered service in the Carquinez Strait. It ceased operations in 1925.

Scope and Content of Collection

This logbook contains daily documentation of the weather, the on-time performance of the ferryboat, a list of trains using the ferry, and the number of passengers for 1913 and 1914.
