Biographical / Historical
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange established St. Joseph Teacher College in 1953 for the education and training of young
sisters. It was a junior college affiliated with Catholic University of America. In 1959, the college was incorporated into
the State of California as a four year liberal arts college and renamed St. Joseph College of Orange. It was accredited by
the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 1962.
In 1967 Marymount College extended an invitation to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange to join in their affiliation with
Loyola University of Los Angeles. In 1968 the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange
partnered in the governing and staffing of Marymount College as it moved to the Loyola University Campus. Five faculty and
one dean transferred from Orange to Marymount College in Westchester. The Sisters of St. Joseph also established a house of
studies at the Loyola University campus for the members of their community who were in their third and fourth year of undergraduate
studies. St. Joseph College of Orange simultaneously began an affiliation with Marymount College, becoming one of its two
branch campuses.
In 1970 St. Joseph College was renamed Marymount College of Orange. It remained operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph but
ceased to offer undergraduate degrees. The campus was accredited by WASC, offering special courses to educate young women
religious from various religious congregations. These religious communities included: the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Little
Company of Mary, and the Poor Clares. During the summer, courses were made available to lay men and women of the community.
With the merger of Loyola University and Marymount College in 1973, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange joined the Society
of Jesus and the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary as part of the Catholic tradition and presence of religious communities
at Loyola Marymount University. Continuing education and summer courses were offered at the Orange Campus of Loyola Marymount
University through the 1980s. Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange continue to serve on the faculty, staff, administration and
the Board of Trustees at Loyola Marymount University.
