The Jimmy Fukuhara Mananzar Camp Collection (1978-2013) contains 0.21 linear feet of photographs, letters, flyers, postcards,
booklets, newspaper clippings, newspapers, and notes related to Jimmy Fukuhara, the Fukuhara family, and the Manzanar incarceration
camp. Included in the collection are photographs of Jimmy and his wife, Eileen, and a school teacher, Eve Beekman, who taught
at the Manzanar camp. Other materials, such as the articles, postcards, and flyers, are about Henry Fukuhara, Jimmy's brother,
and his "Paint Out" Watercolor Workshops to Manzanar and the surrounding areas that began in the late 1980s.
Jimmy Fukuhara was born September 21, 1921, in Los Angeles, California to Ume and Ichisuke Fukuhara. In 1942, Jimmy, his
brother Henry, and the rest of his family were removed from their home and sent to the Manzanar incarceration camp in Independence,
California. Jimmy was able to leave the camp early but was drafted into the army shortly after. When he returned home from
the war, he moved back to Santa Monica to work at the nursery his family operated until he retired in 1986.
Henry Fukuhara was born in 1913 in Fruitland, California. After high school, Henry attended art school but stopped after
two months to support his wife and daughter during the Depression. He continued to pursue a career in art with prints being
exhibited in local libraries and museums until his family moved to the Manzanar incarceration camp during World War Two. After
the war was over, Henry and his family, moved to Long Island, New York and opened a flower growing business. He did not return
to art until the 1970s when he began attending workshops and classes. In 1988, he organized the first "Paint Out" Watercolor
Workshops to Manzanar and the surrounding areas.
