Biography/Administrative History
Buford Williams was born in Missouri and attended Stanford University, receiving his A. B. in Economics in January 1917.
Further studies were put aside in April 1917 when he joined
Stanford’s second unit in the American Ambulance Field Service. Williams and others from Base Hospital No. 30 returned to
San Francisco May 14, 1919. Elizabeth Leslie Meyerfeld of San Francisco was married to Leon Lazare Roos; Leon’s brother,
Major Robert A. Roos, commanded the 36th Company of the 166th Depot Brigade at Camp Lewis, Washington.
Scope and Content of Collection
Eight manuscript letters written to Elizabeth (Leslie) Roos, San Francisco, and four photo postcards of the Base Hospital
No. 30 officers and staff, American Ambulance Field Service, Royat, France, which Buford Williams was assigned to. Five letters
are from Buford (Sonny), accompanied by two letters from “Bernard” at Camp Lewis, Washington, and one from Robert A. Roos,
probably written from Camp Lewis:
