Scope and Content
An artificial collection of over 500 late 19th - early 20th century original portrait photographs by San Francisco studios
and photographers collected by private collector Wayne April. Formats include cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, tintype, mounted
twentieth century prints, and photo postcards. The collection was assembled over the years when Mr. April was a San Francisco
resident and the photographs were collected at local sales and junk shops. Twenty-five percent of the collection consists
of portraits of San Francisco resident Irving Murray Scott and his family during the late 19th century. The general portrait
photographs of the collection are mostly unknown subjects with the photographers and photo studios identified. The photographs
are formal studio portraits with occasional themes (children in First Communion dress, bride and groom wedding attire). The
majority of the people in the portraits are Caucasian with a few Japanese-American and Chinese-American individual, family
and group portraits. San Francisco photographers and photography studios represented include Bradley and Rulofson; Bushnell;
Elite; Godeus; Imperial Studio; New York Gallery; Priest; and Taber. Of note are San Francisco Japanese-American photography
studios including Fusaki, Moriyama, Motoyoshi, Tomikawa, and Yoshizato.
Arrangement
The collection is arranged following the collector's arrangment. The collection is divided into two series: 1. Irving M. Scott
Family Photographs and 2. Portrait Photographs.
