Biographical / Historical

Angelo J. Pepe served in the United States military as a Navy corpsman attached to a Marine unit in Tientsin from July 1946 to July 1947, when his unit was forced out of China and relocated to Guam. Prior to deployment in China, his all-volunteer Navy corpsmen unit trained at United States Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Pepe was discharged in November 1947, and then attended college, got married, and settled in Louisiana.

Scope and Contents

The Angelo Pepe Photograph Collection contains a photograph album documenting the Navy service of Pepe and others attached to or part of the United States Marine unit stationed in Tientsin, China after World War II. The unit served in Tientsin from July 1946 to July 1947, when they were forced out of China and relocated to Guam. The album photographs include portraits and group shots with Pepe and his fellow servicemen, as well as with Chinese individuals. Local scenes show street acrobats, food, bumboats, and rickshaws. Locations depicted include the International Bridge, Skid Road, the Imperial Hotel, the Little Club and St. Anna.
