Historical note

Both Santa Anita Park, located in Arcadia, California, and Hollywood Park, located in Inglewood, California, were notable horse racing tracks. Santa Anita, operated by the Los Angeles Turf Club, opened in December 1934, which made it the first formally established race track in California. The buildings were designed by architect Gordon Kaufmann in combinations of Colonial Revival and Streamline Moderne styles and painted in its signature colors of Persian Green and Chiffon Yellow. Santa Anita Park is still in operation today. Hollywood Park was opened in June 1938 by the Hollywood Turf Club and was designed by architect Arthur Froehlich. Hollywood Park fell on hard times by the 1980s and its history since then has been one of changes of management; and the park ultimately closed in 2013. It was demolished in 2015 in order to make way for a new stadium for the Los Angeles Rams.
