Biographical / Historical

Francis J. Greechan was born in Allentown, PA, in 1928 and remained there caring for his parents for the duration of his life. Greechan was a Private in the 51st Field Artillery, Battalion A, United States Army. He died on July 6, 1997.

This collection contains 49 correspondence written by Pvt Francis J. Greechan, United States army, to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel A. Greechan, leading up to and during the Korean War. It also contains postcards, photographs, and ephemera.

Scope and Contents

This series contains 49 letters from Pvt. Francis J. "Frank" Greechan to his parents, Daniel and Margaret Greechan in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Greechan first served at the end of the Second World War and then served again in the Korean War. He describes life in service, training, guard duty, target practice, and social activities. He writes that he misses his parents and life in Allentown very much. In the spring of 1947, Greechan spent time in a hospital in Pusan for kidney trouble.

This series contains ephemeral materials from Greechan's time in service. Items are three miniature discharge papers, a pamphlet about the US Army transport ship "General Simon B. Buckner," a handout including an illustration of the Buckner and a list of points of interest in San Francisco Bay, and a letter from the commander of the Buckner to all soldiers on board.
