Series 1 P.E.R.S.O.N. Project Files, 1984-1997 (bulk 1990-1997)

Physical Description: 9.5 boxes

Scope and Contents

This series contains the research material gathered on each state relating to its high school textbook policies, general context for its stance on LGBT people and issues, action alerts produced by GLAAD and any miscellaneous materials on the state. The California files are voluminous. In addition, there is research material on numerous subjects that directly relate to the GLBT community and youth. These subjects include AIDS and HIV, the Boy Scouts of America, gender issues, family life, sex education, hate violence, religion and religious opposition, students, and suicide. There are additional materials on organizations, such as GLAAD and PFLAG, with a focus on youth and/or GLBT issues, and on the P.E.R.S.O.N. Project's volunteers and organizational manual.

Series 3 GLAAD Project 21 Files, 1978-1995 (bulk 1990-1995)

Physical Description: 3.25 boxes

Scope and Contents

The files include correspondence, action alerts, newspaper clippings, documentation for textbook adoption, and ephemera. The series appears to be a combination of Jessea Greenman's and Robert Birle's files but they may also include some of David Marshall's files as well. There is a short history of Project 21 at the beginning of the series. The most voluminous material documents the success of the lobbying and activism for health textbook reform in the State of Texas. Robert Birle's Mid-America reports contain press coverage of GLBT and education issues in the Mid-West from October 1992-December 1994. There is also a significant amount of information on California curricula.
