Materials in the collection were donated to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona by Joseph Filippi Winery and Jerry LaPointe, owner of the company that produced the Joseph Filippi Winery videos, between 1999 and 2003 and gathered from Special Collections' Southern California Wine and Wine Industry Collection files.

Biographical / Historical

The Joseph Filippi Winery was started in 1934 by Giovanni Filippi and the Filippi family. Giovanni Filippi originally came to the United States in 1904, working as a mason, and helped to build a winery in the community of Guasti in Southern California. Filippi went back to Italy briefly but returned to the United States with his son, Joseph, in 1920.
In 1922, the family started growing and selling grapes. Their first vineyard was located in the area of modern day Fontana, California. After Prohibition ended, the Filippi family started producing wine.
In 1967, Joseph Filippi and his wife, Mary, bought the historical Thomas Vineyards building in the area then known as Cucamonga. However, the property was badly damaged two years later in a large flood.
The business continued to pass through the family. Joseph (Joey) Filippi became president of the winery after his father died of suicide in 1993. The Filippi brothers, Gino and James, were also forced to find a new building after the Filippi family sold the winery. In 1994, the Filippi brothers moved the winery to the old Regina Winery building in Rancho Cucamonga, California, leasing the building from the city. At one time the Filippis also had nine tasting rooms, including one in Guasti. The Filippis left the Guasti location in 2008, moving their product to the Rancho Cucamonga winery.
As of 2001, Joseph Filippi Winery was the only year-round producing winery in the counties of Riverside and San Bernardino. Joey Filippi became sole owner of the winery around 2015 following legal disputes with his brothers. The winery continues to operate out of Rancho Cucamonga.
Joseph Filippi Winery has won awards for various wines including its Port, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah wines. The winery has also previously used the name "J. Filippi Vintage Company."
