    Historical or Biographical Note

    The paddle ferry UKIAH was launched in 1890 to carry freight trains and passengers across San Francisco Bay, California. After being refitted to carry automobiles in 1923, she was rechristened EUREKA. She went out of service in 1957, and in 1958 she was acquired by the San Francisco Maritime State Historic Park.

    Collection Scope and Content

    The Eureka (built 1890; paddle ferry) wheelhouse photographs, 1950-1957, (SAFR 24641, P15-014) are comprised of photographs taken aboard the ferry EUREKA in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. The collection has been processed to the Collection level and is open for use.
    Contains two black-and-white photographic prints, 3.5 x 3.5 in., of the wheelhouse aboard EUREKA (built 1890; paddle ferry) as seen from the passenger deck while in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, 1950-1957. The nameboard is visible on the wheelhouse. A lifering is mounted on a wall below the wheelhouse. Female passengers are seated in the foreground.
    The images are printed on perforated Kodak Velo paper. The photographs are still attached to one another (the perforation is not torn). Handwritten on the verso of one of the prints are vessel statistics, including dimensions before and after her refit in 1923.
