George Kingsley Hoover was an American minister and philanthropist. At the beginning of the Civil War, he enlisted in Company
F of the 105th Regiment of Pennsylvania Infantry and fought in Virginia and Maryland. After a head wound and a prolonged illness,
he served as a hospital nurse and ward master at Fort Monroe. In October 1863 he was transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps
and was honorably discharged a year later. In 1870, he married Martha Allison and entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal
Church and served in Illinois and Iowa. He attended Northwestern University and graduated from Garrett Biblical Institute
in 1874. In 1888, Reverend Hoover became one of the organizers of Children's Home Society, a charitable organization designed
to provide orphans with foster care, and editor of the Society's monthly, Children's Home Finder. In 1897 he organized the
American Educational and Aid Association, later known as the American Home-Finding Association. He was also very active in
the Civil War veteran organizations.
Pocket diaries of George K. Hoover from 1861 to 1906. Also included are scattered family correspondence and personal documents
of George K. Hoover. The documents include some Civil War items and speeches and letters of Hoover.
