Historical Note:

Formed in 1911, the Southern California Social Science Association (SCSSA) disseminates information about the teaching of social science classes to advance popular education, and to provide an effective professional network among social studies teachers. Membership in SCSSA consists of elementary, middle and high school social science educators who teach such subjects as anthropology, economics, geography, history, philosophy and sociology.
The major activity of SCSSA members has been to organize annual conferences and one-day workshops to acquaint teachers with the latest trends in social science theory, and to provide new methods and formats for teaching their various subject fields. The group also published a newsletter at frequent intervals.
SCSSA has also worked closely with the California Council for the Social Studies (CCSS), the statewide umbrella agency which coordinates the efforts of local associations. Formed in 1962, its Executive Board is comprised of presidents and committee chairpersons of the local groups. In addition to scheduling an annual statewide conference, CCSS works with the California Department of Education to enhance the professional standing of social science teachers. One of the Council's primary functions is to lobby for legislation that would provide more effective educational standards in the state.

Scope and Contents

The Southern California Social Science Association Records documents the functions of the SCSSA through board meeting minutes, budget and financial records, by-laws, conference agendas, and newsletters. The collection dates from 1935, with the bulk of material covering the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The documents illustrate the SCSSA's primary activities, including organizing state and local conferences and workshops, and disseminating information to its membership through newsletters. The collection also contains records of the California Council for the Social Studies including board meeting notes, conference planning materials, statements, newsletters, conference books, curriculum guidelines and standards, membership statistics, newsletters, and a 1935 description of a classroom. The collection is divided into three series: Southern California Social Science Association (1925, 1936-1976), California Council for the Social Studies Administration (1961-1976), and National Council for the Social Studies (1935, 1962-1973).
