Biographical / Historical

Don DeFore (1913-1993) was an American television, film, and radio actor best known for the sitcoms Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1952-1957), and Hazel (1961-1965). Devore was also president of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1954-1955 and was instrumental in arranging for the Emmy Awards to be broadcast on national TV for the first time on March 7, 1955.

This collection contains the papers of American television and film actor Don DeFore (1913-1993). Materials include 31 screenplays, 9 reels of TV film, 16 radio transcriptions of late 1940s programs. Additional materials include movie magazines, publicity materials, playbills, pressbooks, clippings, photos, business papers and personal items. Collection covers the years 1947-1967.
Among the screenplays are The Human Comedy (1943), Going My Way (1944), The Affairs of Susan (1945), Dragnet (1947), and My Friend Irma (1949).

Processing Information

The collection is unprocessed. In 2024, the Cinematic Arts Library transferred the film reels previously held in Box no. 1 to the HMH Moving Image Archive for digitization. Following digitization, the HMH Moving Image Archive deaccessioned the analog originals. AFter the removal of Box no. 1, the Don DeFore papers' extent changed to five boxes, numbered 2-6.
