Biography / Administrative History
Lauren R. Hammond was the first African American woman to be elected to Sacramento City Council. She was born in 1955 and
is a graduate of C. K. McClatchy High School, Sacramento City College, and California State University, Sacramento. Hammond
was elected to Sacramento City Council, District 5, on March 4, 1997, and served until November 2010.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection documents the civic activities of Sacramento City Councilwoman Lauren Hammond, with a small amount of personal
items and awards from her office. Material dates from 1973 to 2010, with the bulk from 1993 to 2010. Originally, Hammond’s
files were loosely arranged in alphabetical order. For ease of use, they have been organized into four series based on the
organizations, boards, and committees she was involved in; her projects; her personal papers and awards; and audiovisual material.
Material includes correspondence mostly in the form of printed emails; notes, agendas, and handouts from meetings; designs
and blueprints for redevelopment projects; awards and certificates; reports; presentation posters; petitions; Polaroid photographs;
VHS tapes; CDs; DVDs; and artifacts.
Most material pertains to Sacramento’s District 5. Topics and subjects included in the collection are redevelopment, civic
issues, public transportation, housing, waste, public parks and spaces, small business, schools, local legislation, 2000 Census
redistricting, predatory lending, vehicles, and the former Western Pacific/Union Pacific Railyard.
Most awards, plaques, and other non-paper or non-machine-readable items were photographed onto archival paper. Papers from
binders often take up multiple folders, with the first and last folders containing the contents of the side pockets.
Arrangement
The collection is arranged into 4 series:
- Series 1. Organizations, boards, and committees, 1993-2010
- Series 2. Project files, 1984-2010
- Series 3. Awards and personal items, 1993-2010
- Series 4. Audiovisual and digital media, 1973-2009
