Arrangement

Scope and Content

Approximately 100 photograph prints (some duplicate images) by Fakir Musafar that were used in exhibitions. Includes gelatin silver prints and digital prints. Prints were not grouped or identified by exhibition or exhibition date, and library staff have not been able to identify when and where prints were exhibited, in most instances. Fakir's notes referenced a "Ball Bizarre Photo Exhibit, Los Angeles" in the 1980s; a Fahey-Klein Gallery exhibition in 2002 related to his book Spirit+Flesh (and perhaps other Fahey-Klein shows); and a Switch Theatre Gallery, London, 2007 exhibition related to Sprit+Flesh. Exhibition prints related to corsets were used in "Cinch" at Femina Potens Gallery in the 1990s, and in "The Erotic Embrace of the Corset" at the Center for Sex and Culture in San Francisco, also in the 1990s. The 14 exhibit prints in the archive are grouped here under the "Erotic Embrace" title, but may have been used in either or both. The GenderFlex exhibition at Femina Potens Gallery (noted by Fakir as 1990s, but may have been exhibited in 2009) were received as a distinct group and have been noted as a group in this guide.

Sub-series 1.3: Contact sheets 1945-2001

Physical Location: PIC boxes 1-6

Arrangement

Arranged by subject.

Note

Contact sheets were received by the library in 3 ring binders, arranged by subject. Library staff removed the contact sheets from the binders, and foldered them essentially as found in the binders, with minor modifications. "Personal Treasures" are arranged by date. Contact sheets with code ON/HG (old negatives, of Hour Glass Corset Company models), are housed together with the other corsetry material.
Matching negatives are housed separately (in NEG boxes 1-5) and are arranged numerically by code within labeled subject dividers, as received by the library.

Scope and Content

Approximately 700 contact sheets of photo shoots showing various body modifications and body play activities, and contact sheets of copy photographs Fakir used for reference, research, or publication. The bulk of the contact sheets are for photographs taken by Fakir Musafar. Many images feature Fakir Musafar.
The last group of contact sheets feature images of people other than Fakir Musafar. Most are photo shoots of people modeling body modifications that include piercings, corseting, branding, and tattooing. There are also pictures of workshops or classes related to the techniques of body modification and various fetish, bondage, and dominatrix situations. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by Fakir's letter code based on the model, event or subject's name (first then last.) Noted people and subjects include Annie Sprinkle, Cleo Dubois (Carla Loomis), Dark Garden corset shop with maker Autumn Adamme, Erik Dakota, Idexa and Black and Blue Tattoo, and Midori. Fakir Musafar does appear in many of the images. The majority of the sheets have model releases, and redacted copies of model release forms are included within the folders when present. (Redactions remove model's address, phone number, signature, and any copies of i.d.s present. Restricted unredacted copies are in the Library's collection files.) Many releases are for a specified project or use.
Subject lists that had been in a clear plastic pocket on the front cover of each binder were gathered together in a folder at the start of this group of contact sheets. Only an alphabetical breakdown of box contents is provided in this finding aid, but a file-level list that includes the names of some models has been retained in the collection file. This list may be checked by staff if specific known names are sought; the full list is restricted due to privacy concerns.

(A file-level list of negative codes and subjects, including some personal names, is available for staff to consult in the library, but has been restricted due to privacy concerns.)

Note

The numbers for negatives with contact sheets seem to be dates that start with the first part the month and end with the last 2 digits the year. For example, 796 is probably July 1996, or 1185 is November 1985. Since these were filed as numeric codes, the file order is NOT chronological.
