This collection was processed by Jennifer Hill in 2020. Negatives were removed from original envelopes, but are were kept
with the collection.
The George Bungaro Tani Photographs (circa 1900-1944) includes 31 negatives and prints about George Bungaro Tani's life. The
collection contains family pictures, portraits, group photos, and photos of Los Angeles and the Granada incarceration camp.
The images in Los Angeles include a movie shoot in the Santa Monica Canyon, George Tani's bamboo furniture store located on
Spring Street, Free Methodist Japanese Mission, Kuroda Electrical Works, and the Sugiyama Employment Agency. Also included
are three photos at the Granda incarceration camp. One of the photos is of Tani, who was 73 when he was incarcerated, and
another is a group photo inside a barrack.
Existence and Location of Copies
The Gerth Archives and Special Collections created digital reproductions from the original material for long-term preservation
and access. These preservation files were scanned to and stored on the Gerth Archives and Special Collections Deparment Drive.

George Bungaro Tani was born in Japan in 1872. Before 1905, Tani opened a bamboo furniture store that sold wholesale and retail
bamboo furniture, mattings, and Japanese art on Spring Street in Los Angeles, California. During World War II, Tani, and most
likely his son, Jiro, moved to the Granada incarceration camp. Jiro was drafted to fight the war in 1945. After the incarceration
camps closed, Tani and his son moved to Denver, Colorado. In 1953, Tani died in Los Angeles, California.
