Biography/Administrative History
Dr. Khoo Joo Ee was a Straits Chinese from Penang, Malaysia. She was curator of the Asian Art Museum at the University of
Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She studied fine arts and history of art in Malaysia, the United States, the Netherlands
and the United Kingdom. She obtained her PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London in
1976. Her dissertation title is Elements from China in Javanese Culture during the Majapahit Period. She conducted extensive
research on Southeast Asian cultures and especially the Straits Chinese culture for over two decades. Her major work The Straits
Chinese: a Cultural History was published by Pepin Press in Amsterdam in 1998. In 2017 a large portion of research and manuscript
material was donated to the University Library at UC Berkeley and subsequently the 35mm slide portion of this collection was
transferred to the CED Visual Resources Center.

Asian cultures.
