Abstract: Lt. Commander Simeon L. Ostermeier, USNR, collected and compiled a collection of 29 original newspapers, 1806-1852, dealing
with the career of Commodore Thomas ap Catesby Jones. In addition, as an original charter member of the Commodore T. ap Catesby
Society of Monterey in 1965, he compiled newspaper clippings about the Society.

Scope and Content of Collection
Three series. Series I: Newspapers, 1806-1852, reporting on Jones's career and especially Jones', believing that the United
States and Mexico were at war, mistaken seizure of Monterey on October 20, 1842, and his formal apology to the Mexican government
of California. Series II is an album of newspaper clippings pertaining to the Commodore Thomas ap Catesby Jones Society with
an article about Jones written by Ostermeier. Series III contains three small oil illustrations, by Ostermeier, of Jones'
capture of Monterey.
