Biography/Administrative History
G. Cajetan Luna is an HIV/AIDS researcher who has done extensive work with youth (especially homeless youth) and AIDS, working
in major cities in the United States and around the world, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro,
San Salvador, and Bangkok.
Luna began his career in the Department of Epidemiology and International Health at the University of California, San Francisco
and has also worked for the National Institute of Mental Health. Luna’s publications include works on HIV/AIDS in youth, AIDS
and sexuality, sex work, behavioral interventions and AIDS policy, and graffiti.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Luna served as executive director of three community-based HIV/AIDS agencies in California:
the San Joaquin AIDS Foundation, the Monterey County AIDS Project, and AIDS Resources Information and Services (ARIS) in Santa
Clara County. There, he developed services and targeted interventions for migrant farm workers, gay youth, and incarcerated
populations. Luna later served as Executive Director of the Center for Health Justice, which focuses on the needs of HIV+
prisoners in California.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection contains files related to Luna’s work with the University of California, San Francisco, the San Joaquin AIDS
Foundation, the Monterey County AIDS Project, the AIDS Resources Information and Services (ARIS) in Santa Clara County, and
the Pan American and World Health Organizations. Much of the collection relates to Luna’s research on, and work with, homeless
youth and HIV/AIDS in Brazil and the United States, including materials from the first international conference on AIDS and
homeless youth in 1990. There are additional conference materials, correspondence, field notes, Luna’s writings and lectures,
grant materials, reports, monographs, subject files, ephemera, photographs, audiovisual materials, computer disks, and a few
artifacts. Some research materials that date back to the early 20th Century, but the bulk of the collection dates from 1981
to 2001. Many research materials are in Portuguese or Spanish.
