Abstract: Thornton Johnson Stauffer (1903-1945) was a native of Sacramento and heir to the Florence T. Clunie estate. This collection is comprised of a small baby book completed through his first year.

Biographical Note

Thornton Johnson "Jack" Stauffer was born on October 15, 1903, to Harry C. and Florence M. Stauffer. His parents operated a drug store a 10th and Q Streets, but divorced in 1916 due to his father's "failure to provide," and Stauffer thereafter raised by his mother. Stauffer worked as a bank clerk and later operated a game farm. Through his mother's side, Stauffer was the grand-nephew of Florence J. Clunie, and when she passed away in October 1934, he received an inheritance of over $300,000. Stauffer was married to Madge Mills until his death in April 1945 from a heart condition. He had one adopted daughter, Esther Joanne Stauffer.

Scope and Contents

This baby book is largely completed and in it is recorded Stauffer's weight up to one year of age, his first words, presents received at his first birthday and other developments during his infancy. The book itself was published by Sunbrights California Food Co., and includes advice and advertisements for the company's baby formula.
