Description
The Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge drawings of the Mrs. C. H. McCormick house (Montecito, Calif.) span 3 linear feet and date from
circa 1897. The collection consists of two sets of 32 architectural drawings (one set of originals and one set of reprographic
copies). Drawings include: plan of beamed ceiling, elevations, sections, details, floor plans, basement and foundation plans,
plans for a gate lodge and stable, and a plan of a formal garden.
Background
The firm Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge was established in 1886 and dissolved in 1914. Based in Boston, Massachusetts the firm
also operated satellite offices in Saint Louis, Missouri and Chicago, Illinois. Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge met in the office
of architect H. H. Richardson, where the three men worked before forming a partnership after Richardson’s death in 1886.
