Abstract: The collection contains research regarding Blake Gumprecht's book
The Los Angeles River: Its Life, Death, and Possible Rebirth. Materials include correspondence, photographs, audio tapes, VHS tapes, and maps. The collection consists of research material
dating from the early twentieth century to the early twenty-first century regarding the Los Angeles River and Aqueduct that
was utilized by Gumprecht for his book.

Processing of the Blake Gumprecht papers was completed by undergraduate students from the University of California, Riverside
as part of the Special Collections & University Archives Backlog Processing Project started in 2015. This project was funded
by the UCR Library and administered by Andrew Lippert, Special Collections Processing Archivist.
Collection Scope and Contents
The collection's material is related to the Los Angeles River and the Los Angeles River Aqueduct. The materials were used
in research for the creator, Blake Gumprecht's book
The Los Angeles River: Its Life, Death, and Possible Rebirth, which was published in 1999 by Johns Hopkins University Press. Photographs ranging from the late twentieth to early twenty-first
century illustate damage that the Los Angeles River has caused in addition to pollution within the river, graffiti along the
river's concrete edges, and popular movies that have been filmed there such as
Grease (1978). Correspondence related to different water resource organizations and Gumprecht's progress for his book are included.
Research articles, newspapers, and maps of the Los Angeles River and the surrounding area span from the late ninteenth century
to early twenty-first century.

Series Scope and Contents
The series contains documents and photographs pertaining to Blake Gumprecht's book
The Los Angeles River. Included are correspondence regarding advertising, publication, and editing of the book. Blake Gumprecht's presentations
regarding water resousources as well as the guidelines and original ideas for his thesis are available. His trip to Los Angeles
and in 1999 and the research from that trip are noted consisting of photographs, receipts, and tickets. There is also information
of different organizations pertaining to water conservation and protection such as the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers
Watershed Council and the Friends of the Los Angeles River (FOLAR).
