Abstract: The Peter Wild Correspondence with Germaine Moon is a collection of correspondence from Wild to Moon during the course of his research in support of his several publications on the history of the Mojave Desert and especially, the Van Dyke family. The collection is comprised of Peter Wild’s correspondence and enclosures he shared with Germaine Moon.

Scope and Contents

The Peter Wild Correspondence with Germaine Moon is a collection of correspondence from Wild to Moon during the course of his research in support of his several publications on the history of the Mojave Desert and especially, the Van Dyke family. The materials are comprised of Peter Wild’s correspondence and enclosures he shared with Germaine Moon. Enclosures include bibliographies, magazine, newspaper and book clippings, pamphlets, genealogies, obituaries, wills, court records, probate records, research notes, and photographs. This collection is arranged as a single series, chronologically by correspondence date.

Biographical / Historical

Peter Wild is a noted writer of poetry and nonfiction prose. Wild is well-known for his literary works such as Cochise and Easy Victory. His poems have been published in numerous magazines, which include Ironwood, Chicago Review, and The American Poetry Review. Wild has become the foremost authority on John C. Van Dyke and the Mojave Desert. His contributions to this field include Daggett: Life in a Mojave Frontier Town; The White Heart of Mojave: an Adventure with the Outdoors of the Desert; and John C. Van Dyke: The Desert. Peter Wild was been a professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Arizona, Tucson, from 1971 until his death in 2009.
Germaine Moon was a local historian and author based in Barstow, California, who performed research for over 30 years for the Mojave River Valley Museum, western universities and colleges, and authors such as Peter Wild. She authored the book Barstow Depots and Harvey Houses and collaborated in the writing of Once Upon A Desert. Moon died in 2003.
