Description
The administrative files for Office of the Dean of Arts and Humanities, the academic-administrative leader of the Division
of the Arts and Humanities, contains records documenting the oversight and coordination of UCSD's arts and humanities departments
and programs. The files also include a considerable portion of the academic planning and academic plan materials created
or collected during the tenure of Dr. Stanley Chodorow, as Dean and Associate Vice-Chancellor for Planning, dating from 1981-1994.
Background
The Dean of Arts and Humanities, reporting directly to the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, is the academic-administrative
leader of the Division of Arts and Humanities, comprised of six large academic departments: History, Literature, Music, Philosophy,
Theatre & Dance, and Visual Arts. The Division administers several centrally managed undergraduate and graduate programs including
several foreign language programs, classical studies, ethnic studies, and the Basic Writing Program. Other units involving
Arts and Humanities faculty and oversight of the Dean include: Center for the Humanities, Mandeville Center, the University
Art Gallery, and affiliated external entities including the La Jolla Playhouse and the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus.
