Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains three correspondence written by Cpl. Lloyd M. Seibert, AEF to his wife Rhoda Grace "Pat" Wheeler Seibert during the First World War. Also included in the collection is a newspaper "The Transit" and a certificate of promotion issued by the U.S. Army.

In his March 1919, he discusses being assigned to the MTO, or Motor Transportation Office, in Boviolles, France and he likes it. In June, he writes from Camp Mills, Long Island where his regiment has been split up and sent to different camps for discharge. He is unsure where he will end up before his release. He also mentions that Pat should not wire money because he is about to get paid, though she does and in his next letter he explains how happy he was that she did because they received passes to go into New York and had never been paid. He is then sent to Camp Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky just days later. He is excited to almost be home, but there has been a delay, which he claims is partly due to 5000 black soldiers, to whom he refers to with a derogatory word, showing up hours before he did.

The clipping was the publication of the 313th Engineers called "The Transit," Volume 1, No. 17, Boviolles, France, Saturday, April 19, 1919.

The promotion certificate commemorates the promotion of Lloyd M. Seibert to the rank of Corporal on April 1, 1919, given in Boviolles, France, signed by Lieutenant Colonel Parsons, Commanding.

Biographical / historical:

Corporal Lloyd Miller Seibert, American Expeditionary Force (4/28/1895 - 2/20/1959) was born in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois. He registered for the draft June 5, 1917 and married Rhoda Grace "Pat" Wheeler on December 5, 1917. He served during the war in France with Company A, 313th Engineers. According to the donor, Cpl. Seibert lived in Louisian, Missouri before and after returning from the war, though the address on the envelopes show that he and his wife were in Jacksonvill, IL. In Missouri, he worked for Stark Brothers Nursery and they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in the mid-1930s where he established his own wholesale florist business. He operated that business until his death in 1959. He is buried in Rosehill Cemetary in Tulsa.
