Biographical / Historical
Herbert Nelson Lowe was born on July 2, 1879 in Lake City, Minnesota. The son of farmers, Lowe moved to California in the
late 1890s where he started collecting shells and began a long correspondence with Henry A. Pilsbry, Curator of Marine Invertebrates
at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. Lowe operated a flower shop in Long Beach and in 1908 married Margaret
Louise Fitts; they later divorced. Lowe traveled extensively on collecting trips to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. He
financed and participated in a San Diego Natural History Museum collecting trip to Porto Libertad and George's Bay, Sonora,
Mexico in February, 1934, under the direction of Laurence M. Huey. Lowe died on June 10, 1936 in Long Beach, California.
