Abstract: This collection contains correspondence written to Gary Whiteley from two soldiers serving overseas during the Korean War. The two authors were Sgt. Robert J. Gendaszek, USA and PFC John Horner, USA.
Condition Description: The collection is in fair condition. A few pages are delicate and should be handled with care. Some minor tears in the letters. The newspaper clipping has a small tear and is housed in a plastic sleeve.

This collection contains letters received by Gary Whiteley from Sergeant Robert J. Gendaszek, United States Army and Private First Class John Horner, United States Army during the Korean War. Gendaszek served with 2nd Squad, Fox company, 1st platoon, 5th Regimental Combat Team. Horner served with Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Regimental Combat Team. Gary Whiteley was in the sixth grade in Fowler, CA when he sent a Christmas box through the Gift Lift program, sponsored by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. Gendaszek and Horner began corresponding with Gary after they received his package. The correspondence consists mainly of Gendaszek and Horner asking Gary about his daily life. They offer brief descriptions of their duties in the service. SGT Gendaszek was a squad leader and PFC Horner served as a switchboard operator. Also included in the collection is a newspaper clipping describing the gift program and Gary's first correspondence with SGT Gendaszek.
