Biography
Robert M. Grubel was an American chemist active in the field of motion picture film processing from
the mid-1940s. For more than 35 years he ran the chemical lab at Consolidated Film Industries (CFI), a
film laboratory and processing company in Hollywood that specialized in color film. For his work on the
automatic developer replenisher system for CFI he received a 1960 Scientific or Technical Award
certificate of honorable mention from the Academy.
Collection Scope and Content Summary
The Robert M. Grubel papers span the years circa 1940-1970 and encompass 3 linear feet. The collection
includes Grubel's notes and reference materials regarding photographic processes and chemical formulas;
documents submitted by Grubel to the U.S. Army Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories in New Jersey on
processing color film; a photocopy of a paper written by Grubel for the 1960 SMPTE convention on the CFI
replenisher control; material for a film chemistry course he taught at Columbia College around 1968, and
a collection of books on motion picture film and photography.
