Abstract:
This collection primarily consists of certificates and awards presented to University of San Diego's first three Presidents:
President Author E. Hughes, President Alice B. Hayes, and President Mary E. Lyons. Commemorative videos of these USD Presidents
are also included.

Author E. Hughes was appointed in 1971 as the first President of the united University of San Diego. Prior to President Hughes'
appointment, the San Diego College for Women and the University of San Diego College for Men employed separate administrations.
During Hughes' 24 year tenure at USD, he oversaw the official merge of the two colleges, the founding of the School of Business
Administration in 1972, the founding the School of Nursing in 1974, the building of residence halls and the University Center,
and establishment of student-life programs like Choral Scholars and the Center for Community Service-Learning
President Alice B. Hayes was inaugurated as the second USD president in July 1995. During her eight year tenure, she oversaw
the construction of the Jenny Craig Pavilion in 2000, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice in 2001, the Douglas
and Elizabeth Manchester Village residence hall in 2002, and in 2003, both the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology
and the Degheri Alumni Center.
President Mary E. Lyons was inaugurated as the third USD president in July 2003. During her twelve year tenure, President
Lyons oversaw USD's growing acclaim as a rigorous institution, creation of the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture, and
the extensive growth of the University endowment.
USD's fourth president, James T. Harris III began his tenure in August 2015.

This collection contains the memorabilia, primarily certificates and awards, and videos of the University of San Diego's first
three Presidents. Inauguration materials for both President Hayes and President Lyons include congratulatory certificates
from various institutions, inauguration invitations and programs, news clips, and inaugural celebration videos. Awards for
President Hayes and President Lyons include plaques, certificates, and commemorative plates from a variety of institutions
including the United Way, the County of San Diego, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Materials from President Hughes'
tenure include meeting minutes from Hughes' establishment of the Administrative Council, materials for Hughes' retirement,
and a
Heart of San Diego
interview with Dr. Hughes. Interview videos of President Hayes, commemorative photographs of President Lyons and Lyons' 2003
State of the University address are also included.
This collection is intellectually arranged into three series with each series representing the records of USD's first three
Presidents.
