This collection primarily consists of certificates and awards presented to University of San Diego's first three Presidents:
President Author E. Hughes, President Alice B. Hayes, and President Mary E. Lyons. Commemorative videos of these USD Presidents
are also included.
Background
Author E. Hughes was appointed in 1971 as the first President of the united University of San Diego. Prior to President Hughes'
appointment, the San Diego College for Women and the University of San Diego College for Men employed separate administrations.
During Hughes' 24 year tenure at USD, he oversaw the official merge of the two colleges, the founding of the School of Business
Administration in 1972, the founding the School of Nursing in 1974, the building of residence halls and the University Center,
and establishment of student-life programs like Choral Scholars and the Center for Community Service-Learning
