Historical or Biographical Note
Captain Albert Freeman Pillsbury was born in 1864 in South Thomaston, Maine, the son of Hiram G. and Sarah (Wentworth ) Pillsbury.
He took to sea as a youth, and at the age of only 17 became the captain of a sailing vessel.
At 25, he became a licensed Master Mariner for both sailing vessels and steamships, being the youngest man up to that time
ever to receive this unlimited license. In 1893, Captain Pillsbury commanded the freighter SS Progresso on a voyage from the
East Coast to San Francisco. Deeply impressed with the Pacific Coast, he resolved to return, and in 1893 (?) then in command
of the SS Mineola, returned to San Francisco to establish his permanent residence. In 1919, he formed a partnership with Captain
Lebbeus Curtis for the practice of marine surveying, ship salvage and consulting engineering. Some years later, after Curtis
moved to New York City, he formed a partnership with Walter L. Martignoni under the firm name of Pillsbury & Martignoni. He
died in 1957.
